Li Cunxin AO was born in 1961 in China. He is a former dancer whose life story is a remarkable journey from humble beginnings to global acclaim. His story has been famously captured in his autobiography “Mao’s Last Dancer,” tracing his rise from a poor village in Communist China to becoming one of the world’s leading ballet dancers.
Li was the sixth of seven sons. At the age of 11, he was selected by Madame Mao’s cultural advisers to attend the Beijing Dance Academy. He underwent rigorous training, enduring long hours and harsh conditions that tested his resilience and determination. Despite the difficulties, Li’s exceptional talent and hard work allowed him to excel in the art of ballet.
In 1979, Li was offered a scholarship to continue his dance studies at the Houston Ballet under the directorship of Ben Stevenson. It was in the United States that Li’s career truly flourished. He defected to the West in a dramatic, 21-hour consulate standoff that made headlines around the world. Once resolved, he became a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and the Australian Ballet.
Li’s dancing was characterised by his technical precision, emotional depth, and powerful performances. He excelled in leading roles in a wide repertoire of classical and contemporary works, winning numerous awards and international accolades.
After retiring from ballet in 1999, Li transitioned to a new career in finance, but his passion for dance never waned. He became a celebrated public speaker and author, sharing his inspirational story with audiences around the world. His autobiography, “Mao’s Last Dancer,” was a bestseller and adapted into a featured film in 2009, bringing his remarkable life story to a broader audience.
In 2012, Li was appointed the Artistic Director of the Queensland Ballet in Australia. Under his leadership, the company has seen substantial growth in its repertoire, financial stability, and public support. Li has been instrumental in elevating the company’s profile on the international stage, showcasing new talents, and attracting world-class choreographers.
Li’s contributions to ballet and the arts have been recognised with numerous awards, including being named the Queen’s Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his service to the performing arts. His life is a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of excellence.
